40% of women have dense breast tissue and require additional screening after a mammogram
Breast cancer is the second most deadly cancer for women. Being able to detect it, and detect it early, is crucial for protecting women. But, for some women, the technology used for imaging falls short.
Breasts are made up of mostly fat tissue. However, about 40% of women have dense breasts, meaning that there is less fatty tissue and a higher amount of dense types of tissue, such as glandular and fibrous connective tissue. Dense breast tissue alone is not an alarming characteristic. However, it makes a woman up to three times more likely to develop breast cancer.
Getting proper imaging done is challenging for women with dense breasts. There are billions of dollars spent on additional imaging or diagnostics after an initial mammogram, simply because the imaging is not clear enough to rule out problems. To add to the complexity of the issue, there is a shortage of qualified radiologists, contributing to frequent missed diagnoses among women with dense breasts.
